Fair Packets

With all the recent buzz surrounding ‘NetNeutrality’, internet regulation and related subjects I have gained a renewed appreciation for the thing that consumes more of my time than oxygen inhalation; that being of course the internet. To some it represents an avenue for paying bills, donating to their favorite charities, gaining medical knowledge or just plain surfing/blogging. To me it embodies an idea; a concept bursting with fresh unbiased ideas from the independent consumer to the mighty comps all equalized within a singal unified goal: Communication. I have forgotten how important it is to communicate free of idealistic oppression; free of bias, rejuvenated by my desire to protect that freedom within the net; our last open channel of free speech.

Whether you agree with NetNeutrality or free market idealism in regards to the future of the Internet, neither side can disagree with the importance of preserving the environment for which the net has flourished. If we loose its viability, so will we lose the platform for companies like Google and Ebay to emerge while promoting the monopolies/duopolies like Comcast and ATT. This is the core issue of net preservation and whether or not GOV regulation is the answer remains to be seen. The problem here is that NetNeutrality strives to solve a future problem rather than fix a present one. Opponents of the concept claim NetNeutrality is a solution in search of a problem. In my opinion, preventing telcos from causing harm now is a much smarter solution than cleaning up the mess afterwards.

If the internet collapses into a chanelistic cable like environment where content is chosen by the ISP and presented accordingly it will truly be a monumental socialistic defeat for mankind and a solidification of a dark fate for the net; one riddled with virtual advertising, filtered communication and political/religious discrimination by a handful of monarchial business figures.
