Save the Internet!!

I, like probably many others, received an email from Ebay shedding light on a major problem that has somehow slipped past me until this point. In case you either did not receive this letter or for whatever reason are in the dark on this situation let me shed some light on something infuriating.

The internet as we know it is a plethora of expression from big business to individual bloggers and that very diversity is coming under attack from the major cable and phone internet providers. These companies are robustly lobbying congress with hopes of blocking a ‘Net Neutrality’ bill from passing that would essentially protect the free and open Internet from being converted into a fee based tier leveled super-tollway. That’s right, these companies want more money for their pipeline usage by turning the democratic internet into a literal super highway where only the rich could afford to cruise. The rest of us would be stuck with enormous fees for anything Internet related while usage speeds would crawl to a hault if your site could not afford the costs of superior access. Not only that but these companies, having monopolized the internet, would use their power to discriminate against everything but their own content and services. It would be similar to the cable you have in your home; we would have to choose from what the cable companies offer as far as content on the web.

I incourage anyone remotely concerned for the future of our internet and the freedom we take for granted to click here and do something about it; write to congress, tell your friends, call whoever you can. Do something. There is a wealth of information on this issue at www.savetheinternet.com.
